  1. Aloha Richard,

As stated on your website, you are a believer in the saying, “keep the country, COUNTRY.” What I wanted to ask is how Envision La’ie fits in to your plan? Are you for it? If so, then how should HRI or the county go about it? If you aren’t, then what might be our alternative solutions?

My name is Nakia Nae’ole, and I am a lifetime[23 years : ) ] member of this community(La’ie, with family in Kahuku, Hau’ula, Ka’a'awa) who has made the decision to make sure I do everything in my power to keep my young but growing family, permanent residents of this beautiful area. I wanted to know what you felt about locals and their situations of having to move away because of not being able to make ends meet, while BYU-H professors who have the top paying jobs within the economy of the NS, continue to buy these leftover homes and rent them out. And when mortgages are paid off, they turn around and sell the them. I was told by fellow student of mine here at BYU-H(who is from Utah), that “locals, should not be offended, and that we as locals should have made life better for ourselves.” I was kind of shocked when I heard those words, and held in a lot of anger, but kept my composure and decided to just walk away. My feelings towards that statement are that we as polynesians are primarily excellent with our hands and that when given the opportunity we are able to showcase what amazing feats our hands and mind are capable of, and that our parents are the remnants of that generation, while we as the new generation are a combination of both. And that technology had crept up on them a little too quickly. What I really want to know is, will this pattern of BYU-H faculty and staff having the first and best picks within the communities continue, or will we as locals have an equal opportunity to compete for ourselves. Personally if there was some type of rule stating that within our communities one family is allowed to own only one home/plot, I would gladly support that. Please, if I would love to hear where you stand on this subject. Being that you are an alumni of BYU-H, and I a soon to be alumni, I am excited to hear your feedback.

With much concern for the future, and many thanks for your time,
    Mahalo nui loa,

    Nakia Nae’ole

  2. Congratulations on winning the Primary. Looks like an uphill battle for the win in November, but hang in there. How can I get a T-shirt?

  3. Your website does not indicate whether you support development on the North Shore. I voted for Gil in the past because of his selfless time and energy spent on protecting the North Shore. Also, do you support further development in the Laie area? The traffic is horrendous – this should be addressed before consideration of further development. Most people live in the country with the knowledge that jobs will be scare, but it their choice. Using “development” as an excuse to create jobs does not cut it for those who have saved our pennies and dimes to live in the country. Tourisim should not be comingled with residential areas. I can’t live in a commercial-zoned building, so why should bed-breakfast and other tourist attractions be acceptable in residential areas? I have had conversations with new arrivals that “absolutely love the North Shore”, but try to morph it into something more convenient for them. Enough already!I don’t like people using the “Keep Country, Country” motto but support development in the back-room. Please expand on your platform.

    Thank you for your attention.
